England coach Jimmy Floyd Hasselbaink was involved in an altercation with the fourth official against Brazil at half-time after following him through the tunnel.

Hasselbaink and the rest of the Three Lions coaching staff are said to have been frustrated after Lucas Paqueta avoided a red card in the first half at Wembley.

Paqueta was eventually shown a yellow card for bringing down Jude Bellingham after a series of fouls, but could have been sent off after another clumsy tackle on the midfielder.

Bellingham raised his complaints with the linesman, but Paqueta’s second challenge ultimately went unpunished, allowing him to emerge for the restart.

Hasselbaink wanted to confront the fourth official after the half-time whistle and both men had a conversation in a foreign language, while another player also waded in.

Channel 4 broadcaster Kelly Sommers said: “Well, I can tell you it may have been tough on the pitch, but it was tough in the tunnel too.

‘I was behind the Brazilian bench, they were animated throughout the first half.

‘England coach Jimmy Floyd Hasselbaink followed the fourth official through the tunnel. They were deep in conversation. I’m not multilingual, it wasn’t in English.

‘But Danilo (Brazil right back) also got involved. Hasselbaink’s message was: “one, two, three, four mistakes, too many mistakes”.’

Paqueta was taken away amid loud cheers halfway through the second half.

Announcing the decision, boss Southgate said: ‘He is someone I know from having played with him at Middlesbrough and I know how curious he is about his coaching and he took that very seriously during his time as manager.

‘Because he is also well managed, but also has a keen eye for the attacking players, he will provide us with a very good counterpart in terms of different views and opinions.

“He has a great personality within the group and he can be challenging and demanding, and I think we need that within our coaching team. We need that for the players, we need the entire group to demand more and more from each other.

“It’s been hard to get where we are now, but getting to the next part is the biggest challenge of all and we hope Jimmy can help us get there.”
