England captain Leah Williamson has been banned from Friday’s clash with the US at Wembley after suffering an ankle injury during training.

The defender, who will also miss next Tuesday’s friendly with the Czech Republic, will remain with England to undergo further assessments on the extent of the injury.

Williamson’s injury is a huge blow to Sarina Wiegman, who also lost striker Alessia Russo to an injury on Monday.

Russo missed Manchester United’s Continental League Cup match with Aston Villa on Saturday, but her injury is not serious.

Both Russo and Williamson played a big part in Lionesses’ victory at Euro 2022 and will make the task of beating the US that much harder.

Williamson’s injury will also be a concern for Arsenal. The centre-back is a key player for the Gunners and has started every game this season.

Lucy Parker, who was called up for the first time last week, has also suffered an injury. Williamson’s Arsenal team-mate Lotte Wubben-Moy and Manchester United’s Nikita Parris have been added to the 23-man roster as replacements.

England are still unbeaten under Wiegman, but that record will be tested against the US. The match with the world champions sold out in less than 48 hours after the Lionesses were crowned Euro winners.
