Arsenal and England goalkeeper Aaron Ramsdale have revealed for the first time that his wife Georgina suffered a miscarriage on a flight back to the UK in January.

After the Winter World Cup in Qatar, players were given an extended break and Ramsdale and his wife took the opportunity to go abroad.

But on the six-hour flight home, disaster struck when Georgina miscarried her first pregnancy. Ramsdale would play for Arsenal just three days later.

“There are things in our lives that the public has no idea about, and the past year has been an emotional rollercoaster for me and my family,” he wrote in an open letter to the Players stand.

“There’s no way I could describe the pain of that six-hour flight back to London, not even now.

“I just want people to know that if they’re going through it themselves, they’re not alone.”

He added: ‘When we got back I didn’t tell a lot of people what happened. Just my family, my teammates and of course Mikel (Arteta). He was fantastic about everything. Even in the middle of the title race, with so much pressure on the club, he asked me if I needed some time off to process everything. Mikel went above and beyond to make sure me and my family were okay.’

Ramsdale had to decide three days later whether to play against Tottenham Hotspur – one of the biggest games of the season for any Arsenal player or fan.

He chose to play because it was “the only way” to contemplate the devastating loss of their baby.

“Football has always been my escape,” he said. “I told the manager I wanted to play.”

The couple recently revealed they’re expecting again — but no one outside their inner circle knew she was carrying a child earlier this year.

In a video posted to Instagram in June, Ramsdale and his flight attendant wife, who married at Chelsea’s Old Town Hall two months ago, was seen debuting her new baby bump.

The clip shows a positive pregnancy test on top of a baby onesie that reads, “I love you so much daddy.”

Jumping forward a few weeks, the video montage cuts them eating gender-revealing cupcakes — tactically filtered in black and white.

Ramsdale’s Players’ Tribune letter touched on a host of never-before-seen topics, including how his West End gigging brother is gay and why he’s unwilling to turn a blind eye to homophobic comments he hears in a football locker room.

He added: “Over the years I’ve probably bit my tongue a few too many times – both in locker rooms and on social media – when I hear homophobic comments or stupid things. And I think my brother may have done the same, thinking it would make my life easier. Well, that ends today.’
