England secured their place in the World Cup quarter-finals by beating Nigeria on penalties after a 0-0 draw in 120 minutes of action on Monday morning.
It was Georgia Stanway who took England’s first penalty. She looked confident as she headed for the spot, but failed to hit the target and send it wide of the left post.
However, England got a lifeline when Nigerian international Desire Oparanozie fired her shot wide of the post.
Beth England came forward next and kicked the ball into the roof of the net to watch the Lionesses register their first goal.
Michelle Alozie went next for Nigeria and skied over the crossbar, putting England in full control of the penalty shootout.

Rachel Daly took advantage of Alozie’s miss and scored from the penalty – with a lightning fast shot into the top left corner.
Rasheedat Ajibade managed to find the back of the net to put Nigeria on the scoreboard before Alex Greenwood stepped over for England.
Greenwood slid the ball into the bottom right corner to see England go up 3-1 and move closer to a place in the quarter-finals.
