The energy crisis is pushing thousands of households on prepayment meters, putting vulnerable people at risk of being cut off this winter.

In the six months to March, according to comparison site Uswitch, 60,000 new top-up meters were installed.

Households that are regularly behind on their electricity or gas bills are often placed on prepayment meters to avoid getting into even more debt.

But pay-as-you-go meters cost an average of £50 more a year in fixed costs than paying by direct debit, putting thousands at risk of being cut off.
