‘End-to-end analytics’: Samsung Medical Center is the first in APAC to reach the highest stage for HIMSS’s analytics model
Samsung Medical Center in South Korea has achieved another digital health milestone by reaching Phase 7 for the HIMSS Adoption Model for Analytics Maturity.
The AMAM measures the analysis capabilities that healthcare organizations have acquired by having a strong analysis strategy.
This marks SMC’s fourth Phase 7 validation – the highest phase for the HIMSS models – and is the first healthcare provider in Asia Pacific to reach Phase 7 for the model.
WHY IT MATTERS
Healthcare organizations with an advanced analytics strategy can improve facets of their business operations beyond clinical decision support, such as operations and finance.
One example of this shown by the SMC team was how, by analyzing usage across the very important and complex medical supply chain, the hospital was able to reduce congestion by having automated guided vehicles deliver supplies during periods of low traffic in the initial period. morning.
Julius Bogdan, VP, Digital Health Advisory, HIMSS: “My favorite case study from Samsung Medical Center was analyzing the supply chain, managing inventory, automating it, and building a robotic cart to not only save time and effort , but also storage space, so that we have everything up to date, minimizing shrinkage, stock and oversupply.
“That was fantastic. This is the end-to-end analysis, analyzing that capability or analyzing your inventory and inventory management, automating that process and then implementing it with robotics.”
The hospital also demonstrated numerous ways in which analytics during validation positively impacted patient outcomes.
For example, a system that recommends treatment methods based on pressure ulcer stages is integrated into nurses’ workflow. When a photo of the pressure ulcer area is taken, the system indicates its stage and suggests appropriate treatment methods.
“This system helps nurses with limited clinical experience and helps assess patients with unclear conditions, reducing the progression of pressure ulcers to higher stages,” said Soyun Shim, registered nurse at SMC.
Another system, DeepCars, helps predict the risk of cardiac arrest within 24 hours for all admitted patients in all departments and notifies the hospital’s Samsung Medical Alarm Response Team (SMART) team.
“(This) is a team that monitors patients admitted to general wards for acute deterioration and provides treatment before deterioration to prevent and reduce intensive care unit occupancy and sudden cardiac arrest,” says Dr. Ryoungeun Ko, who works in the ICU of the SMC.
THE GREATER CONTEXT
In 2022, SMC scored its first HIMSS Stage 7 for the infrastructure adoption model. The hospital added several achievements to its name the following year, reaching Phase 7 for its digital imaging and electronic health record models. It also came first in the HIMSS Digital Health Indicator global rankings that year.
ON THE RECORD
“For SMC, the AMAM certification has a meaning akin to a space station being briefly visited on the journey of improvement through insights from data. The journey of improving medical treatments and operations based on data and information at SMC is more akin to space travel than to traveling on railroads, highways or waterways. There are no boundaries or clear endpoints, and it continually unfolds like the vastness of space. Since the goal is not the construction or upgrades of systems, various methods and analyzes are tried through joint efforts of multiple departments in the process of improving processes,” says Oksoon Jeong, Manager, Data Service Platform, SMC.
When asked about their hospital’s further plans for digital transformation, SMC said Healthcare IT News reports that it is considering how it can empower its patients to take charge of their own healthcare through GenAI.
“Patients will be able to understand their health status in simple language rather than difficult medical terms, allowing them to live a healthy life that goes beyond just treating diseases. SMC dreams of the day when a virtual health management assistant in mobile AI easy-to-understand speaking language will be deployed, accelerating such changes that align with SMC’s vision,” said Prof. Wochul Cha, CMIO, SMC.
