Heartbreaking images of five emu chicks being run over and left for dead on a remote road in a national park have sparked community outrage over what has been described as a “deliberate act of cruelty”.

A search for answers is underway after ‘butchered’ chicks were discovered in various states of trauma with horrific injuries on a dead-end road in Hawke National Park in Yeagarup in south-west Western Australia on Saturday.

Volunteer wildlife keeper Leonie Burt was called to the harrowing scene, and when she arrived, two chicks were already dead.

Three others who were barely clinging to life were rushed to Manjimup Veterinary Clinic, but they were in such poor condition that there was no choice but to put them down.

One had a broken spine, another with a broken leg, while a third with a broken pelvis and crushed leg fought hard to stay alive but ultimately succumbed to his injuries.

An emotional Mrs. Burt is still traumatized by the horrific discovery and believes it was a deliberate act of animal cruelty.

“The way the birds were placed, they were spread out and quite far apart,” he told Seven News.

‘If five birds had been walking in a row in the middle of the road, that’s where they would have fallen but they were everywhere.’

“It was the most horrible scene I’ve ever come across and these babies were looking at me like ‘what have we done to deserve this?’

“It was the most horrible brutality I have ever seen. Someone has knocked these babies down. They have been persecuted.

Three chicks were still alive, but later had to be euthanized due to the severity of their injuries.

As the shocking act took place in a national park, the culprits responsible could face criminal charges if they are tracked down.

The harrowing images show emu chicks scattered along and in the middle of the road.

‘Why would someone run over five emu chicks and not stop and call for help? Unfortunately, there was no sign of mum and the bush is too thick to penetrate,” shared Amaris Wildlife Rehabilitation Sanctuary.

The sanctuary later added that there was no sign of the chicks’ father, their primary caretaker.

Locals believe that the horrible incident was not an accident. In the photo are the five emus scattered along the dead end road.

The Department of Biodiversity, Conservation and Attractions is investigating.

‘They are looking for Daddy Emu and moving the deceased to the bush. They also have a camera installed and will control all the vehicles that transited through the area. This was in a national park,” the sanctuary added.

Members of the local Pemberton community have contributed a $1500 reward for anyone with information on who is responsible.

“The community is very strong and they can see that this is an act of cruelty and should not be tolerated,” Ms. Burt said.

‘These people must be prosecuted.’
