Emotional moment basketball stars are told they’re going to the Olympic Games as one player’s immediate response stuns fans

  • Two Australian basketball stars have been told they are going to Paris
  • Brian Goorjian broke the news to Jack McVeigh and Will Magnay
  • Magnay’s reaction was praised by basketball fans

Jack McVeigh and Will Magnay found themselves in the conversation that every athlete dreams of, when the pair were told they would be representing Australia at the Olympics.

The Tasmania Jack Jumpers teammates were told by Boomers coach Brian Goorjian that they have been selected for the men’s team that will play in Paris this month. Their reactions were shared widely on social media.

The 28-year-old small forward McVeigh was visibly pleased to be included in the squad, at one point Goorjian told him to ‘relax’.

But it was Magnay’s immediate response that earned him praise from fans, who asked Goorgian: ‘Did Jack make it?’

When he heard that his best friend had also reserved a seat on the plane to France, he was delighted.

“Let’s fucking go!” he shouted.

Goorjian was very complimentary of both players, telling McVeigh he is a “self-made man” and admitting to Magnay that he was involved in his plans from the first training session.

Fans posted a message on X – formerly known as Twitter – complimenting Magnay for taking such good care of his buddy McVeigh.

“Awesome,” said one fan. “So good that the first thing Will wanted to know during his own celebration was if Jack had made it.”

Another fan said: ‘This is absolutely unreal. I love Jack’s emotion and Will wanted to know if his mate made it. So cool!’

“You can’t be mad about the selections when you see this,” a third fan said. “Will asks if Jack voted within seconds of hearing he was in.”

A fourth fan said the video exemplifies the pride it takes to represent Australia.

“We need guys like him, who are emotional and proud to wear that green and gold,” he said. “Well done.”

The good news for the players came when ageless star Lauren Jackson made history by selecting the Australian women’s team for the Paris Olympics at the age of 43.
