Emotional Biden has to be guided on stage and kisses his sister on the lips at plaque unveiling for late son Beau
An emotional President Joe Biden was led onto the stage as he attended the unveiling of a plaque for his late son Major Beau Biden on Monday to mark Veterans Day.
The president traveled back to Delaware on Monday afternoon, with the White House providing no information about why he was making the trek home after a weekend getaway at Rehoboth Beach.
At the scene, he was seen giving sister Valerie Biden a smooch on the lips and hugging Beau’s widow Hallie – who famously dated Hunter Biden after Beau’s death from brain cancer in 2015.
The plague was installed at the Grubb/Worth Mansion in Claymont, Delaware, the town outside Wilmington where the 81-year-old president grew up.
On his way to the podium, the president stopped to touch the Guardian of Defenders Monument, and was then led to the speaking venue by Major General Francis Valala.

Valala said Beau was a “truly patriotic American soldier” and said his job was to introduce “a local guy.”
“Someone who grew up here in Claymont and has taken his deep-rooted small-town values with him onto the world stage. A soldier father, a leader who has done more for our military than anyone in decades,” Valala said.
Valala then pointed to the PACT Act, which increased health benefits for veterans.
Earlier during the Veterans Day ceremony at Arlington National Cemetery, Biden pledged to further improve cancer care for veterans exposed to toxins before leaving the White House in January.
The president began his speech by mumbling about how he remembered the Grubb/Worth Mansion as a child.
It now serves as the headquarters of the Holy Rosary Church.
In 2021, a Guardian of Defenders Monument was installed on the site to mark the 20th anniversary of the September 11 terrorist attacks.

That’s where the plague of Beau Biden will reside.
“He was so damn proud. I am so proud to join the military, the National Guard,” Biden recalled.
The younger Biden, who served as attorney general of Delaware, told his father he had a “duty” to serve.
“That was the code my son lived by. Duty,” the president said.
Biden talked about how the United States is unique because it was founded on an “idea” – and quoted the Declaration of Independence, adapting the quote to read “that all men and women are created equal.”
‘That’s why we were founded. That’s who we are. That’s who we were. That is who we remain. And but thanks to our veterans, thanks to many of you, even though there have been temptations to walk away from that democratic idea, we’ve never walked away from that,” Biden said.
“Folks, Beau would be very honored, very honored with his plaque, although he would also say, ‘Dad, it’s not about me,’” the president continued.
Biden also said he wanted to revisit the memorial once his entire family could join him.
After the ceremony was completed, he took the motorcade to his church, St. Joseph on the Brandywine, to visit Beau’s grave.
