Emma McKeon breaks her silence on THAT Melbourne Cup champagne gaffe and reveals her one regret from the 2024 Paris Olympics

Emma McKeon has broken her silence about a nasty accident at the Melbourne Cup that left her completely drenched in champagne.

The Australian swimming champion, 30, was left red-faced on Derby Day at Flemington Racecourse when she got soaked while trying to do GH Mumm’s iconic ‘tap tap moment’.

She tapped the three-liter jeroboam bottle with a saber, but the champagne exploded, drenching her completely, instead of flying high into the air as expected.

Emma’s very lavish Christian Dior dress, estimated to cost $10,000, was left covered in alcohol and showed a shocked expression at the awkward blunder.

Speaking to Ny Breaking Australia at Marie Claire’s Women of the Year Awards in Sydney on Wednesday, Emma broke her silence about the unexpected accident.

The Olympic swimming champion proved she has a sense of humor and hilariously joked about her watering with a tongue-in-cheek one-liner.

“I think I’m used to being wet, so it’s just different being wet from champagne versus chlorine,” she joked.

While walking the red carpet with her boyfriend Cody Simpson, Emma also reflected on her success at the 2024 Olympic Games in Paris and shared her one regret.

While Emma took home gold for Australia in the 4×100 freestyle relay, she admitted she would have liked to have competed in the freestyle singles final as well.

She narrowly missed qualifying for the race in the Olympic Trials, with Mollie O’Callaghan and Shayna Jack securing the two Australian positions instead.

Reflecting on the Games, Emma said: ‘Paris has put on such an excellent Olympic Games, it’s such an iconic city, so I really wanted to be part of those Olympic Games.

“I probably wanted to be part of that 100m freestyle final in the race itself, but to be part of that 4x100m relay, which has such a great history and is such a special relay for Australia.

“It’s kind of like a relay that we’re part of and that’s what raises the bar for us every year. I felt very honored and special to be part of it.’

Emma is now enjoying some down time with her singer boyfriend Cody after the Olympics and said they are making the most of the time away from the ‘intensity’.

“We’ve just been on holiday in Europe for three weeks so that was really nice to get the chance to switch off and catch our breath from the high intensity, that was really nice,” she said.

Emma and Cody went ‘Instagram official’ with their relationship in July 2022, three months after they started dating in secret.

Last year the loving couple celebrated this by buying their first house together.

The pair spent $1.826 million on a family home on the Gold Coast, proving their headline-making romance has flourished as training for the 2022 Commonwealth Games gets more serious.

Cody recently tried his hand at competitive swimming, but narrowly missed qualifying for the Olympics, although he eagerly supported Emma’s success.

Despite missing out on the freestyle final in Paris, Emma rose to prominence at the Games, becoming Australia’s most decorated Olympian.

Emma won three Olympic medals at the Paris Games, taking home gold in the 4x100m freestyle relay, silver in the 4x100m medley relay and bronze in the mixed 4x100m medley relay.

Her success means she has collected fourteen Olympic medals since 2016, bringing her Olympic career to an incredible end after she declared Paris would be her last.
