Emily Blunt rakes in the cash selling medication with Chris Evans before the FBI crash the party in new trailer for Netflix film Pain Hustlers

A new trailer for the upcoming drama Pain Hustlers has been released, further teasing the drama in which Emily Blunt’s desperate character finds herself embroiled.

The Netflix film, based on the true crime biopic of the same name, follows a determined mother (Blunt) who starts working for a pharmaceutical company – and the legal consequences that follow her rise to success.

The trailer begins by showing the dire financial circumstances Lisa and her daughter face before things turn in their favor.

Lisa is hired to work in sales at a pharmaceutical start-up by Chris Evans’ character Pete, starts earning six figures and enjoys huge success.

But they all catch up, as the FBI is seen crashing the party.

The trailer opens with Lisa moving into a roadside motel with her daughter, eating ramen noodles and other junk food and watching her car pull away dejectedly.

She vows to improve her life and convinces Pete to hire her: “Give me a chance, please,” she whispers, before he finally agrees. ‘Don’t embarrass me,’ he replies.

Soon after, he learns how life-changing that job can be.

“Get the doctor to prescribe you medicine,” Pete said. ‘You know what we charge on a full dose scenario?’

‘What?’ she asks. ‘Forty thousand,’ he replies.

‘A year?’ she explains. “A month,” he says.

Despite the dreamy numbers, deep down Lisa knows something is wrong. “On some level, I knew it was bullshit,” he can be heard saying.

Still, she gets over her reservations and goes to work, trying to convince doctor after doctor to prescribe the drug before she successfully gets it.

Her hard work pays off, as Pete informs her that she will make $600,000 that year – $500,000 more than she expected.

As the money pours into her bank account, she grabs a Mercedes-Benz convertible and begins teaching other new sales reps her way.

‘Work with your back to the walls, own your territory!’ she directs. ‘Own your territory! Owner of the territory!’ she continues in her fiery, motivational speech cheering on the sales reps.

Yet despite her success, impressive sales still fail to impress the company’s boss, played by Andy Garcia.

“If you don’t paddle, you die.” Sales are down,” he tells her.

“Sales are steady at $170 million for the quarter,” she reminds.

Still, he’s not convinced. He yells and instructs her to keep pushing forward.

“Use your crisis as your fire,” he says, as a video of Lisa relaxing next to her daughter flashes on the screen.

Their life seems to have improved, as her daughter is reading a book with wireless headphones and sitting in a sumptuous bed next to her mother.

“You’d be amazed what you’d be capable of,” he continues.

All their success soon starts to come crashing down on them.

Her daughter is seen encouraging her, “It’s not your fault,” she gently informs her mother. ‘You are not a bad person.’

Andy’s character appears to be ushered into the courtroom as Lisa shuffles through the filing cabinet before the FBI closes in on their scheme.

The film also stars Catherine O’Hara, Jay Duplass and Chloe Coleman, and is based on the book by Evan Hughes, with an adaptation of the screenplay by Wells Tower.

The book was an expansion of Hughes’ 2018 New York Times article called The Pain Hustlers, which looked at the pharmaceutical company Insys and its questionable business practices.

While the film is ostensibly inspired by the real-life company Insys, the characters appear to be entirely fictional.

David Yates – who directed the last five Harry Potter films – takes the helm, directing from Wells Tower’s adapted screenplay.

Pain Hustlers will be released on Netflix on October 27th.
