Emily Blunt breaks her silence on The Devil Wears Prada sequel rumours amid claims she’s being eyed to return alongside Meryl Streep

Emily Blunt has broken her silence on reports that a long-awaited sequel to The Devil Wears Prada is finally in the works.

Rumors have been swirling for weeks that the 41-year-old actress would reprise her role as sharp assistant Emily Charlton, and that Meryl Streep would also return as Miranda Priestley, Runway’s combative editor-in-chief.

Emily spoke to PEOPLE at the American Institute for Stuttering’s 18th Annual Gala on Monday, and was asked about the news that the sequel has been greenlit.

Joking, “What next?” she added, “Oh my God, I can’t tell you anything!”

Referring to her character’s flawless look in the film, she added: “I’m going to put on some nice eye makeup again, right?”

She then joked that she would be reprising her role, referencing Emily’s battle with the stomach flu, which forced her to lose weight in order to attend Paris Fashion Week.

“I need to get a stomach bug and put on some eye makeup. That’s what I’m hoping for!” the star added.

Disney has hired screenwriter Aline Brosh McKenna, who adapted the original 2006 film from Lauren Weisberger’s 2003 novel of the same name, according to Variety.

While it has not yet been confirmed that the original cast will return, the plot description suggests that both Meryl Streep (Miranda Priestley) and Emily Blunt (Emily Charlton) would be back.

The news of a sequel comes just days after a musical adaptation debuted in London’s West End, starring Vanessa Williams as Miranda Priestley and featuring brand new music from Elton John.

The sequel follows Priestley and her career in the present day, when traditional magazine publishing is in decline.

She comes into conflict with Charlton, who is known as a top executive at a luxury group, while Priestley tries to get advertising money from that company.

None of the reports mention whether Anne Hathaway would return as Andrea “Andy” Sachs, or if other supporting characters would return, including Stanley Tucci, Simon Baker, Adrian Grenier, Gisele Bundchen and Tracie Thoms.

The original film is an adaptation of Weisberger’s novel of the same name, which is loosely based on her time as an assistant to Vogue editor-in-chief Anna Wintour.

The story follows Andy, a Northwestern University graduate who somehow lands a job as a junior personal assistant to Miranda Priestley, the editor-in-chief of Runway Magazine.

She tries to use this experience to pave the way for better journalistic opportunities, but finds it difficult to adapt. Yet she proves more than up to the challenge.

The film, directed by David Frankel, was a surprise box office hit, grossing $124.7 million in the US and $326.7 million worldwide, despite a budget of only $35 million.

Streep won a Golden Globe for her role and was also nominated for an Oscar.

Wendy Finerman, who produced the original, will also return to produce, but no director has yet been attached.

There has been talk of a sequel for years. In 2013, Weisberger wrote a sequel novel, Revenge Wears Prada.

However, the stars of the original have all indicated that they are not interested in a sequel to that film adaptation.

Blunt and Hathaway recently interviewed each other for Variety’s Actors on Actors series, with Blunt talking about how much fun they had.

“We just had a great time with that movie. I don’t know if any of us knew it would become what it did. It’s quoted to me every week. It will be the movie that changed my life,” she said.
