Elon Musk’s ex Grimes says artists can use her voice in AI-generated songs

Elon Musk’s ex-Grimes told artists they could use her voice in AI-generated songs for a fair share of royalties — days before she left her record label.

The Canadian singer, 35, on Sunday offered her fans to use her music “without penalty” in exchange for a 50 per cent profit – following an AI hit song performed in the voices of Drake and The Weeknd.

Grimes, whose real name is Claire Boucher, said nothing was off limits and that her “ultimate goal has always been to push boundaries rather than make a fun song.”

While Grimes is open to the possibilities of AI, her next steps are unclear following her unexpected split from Columbia Records, according to Billboard.

The Shinigami Eyes lead singer seemed excited about the future and the AI offerings.

While copyright can be an issue in the AI world, Grimes informally assured that artists would not be penalized for experimenting with her voice.

“I think it’s cool to be fused with a machine and I like the idea of open sourcing all art and killing copyright,” she wrote.

Grimes recognized the uncertainty of AI and the latest frontier technology in the music world.

“It’s about poking holes in the simulation and seeing what happens, even if it’s a bad result for us,” she added.

While Grimes maintained that nothing was off limits, she later claimed that copyright could be an issue if her music was used for “toxic” purposes.

“Okay hate this part but we are ONLY allowed to do copyright takedowns for highly toxic grimes voiced lyrics,” she wrote.

Grimes explained that artists should “really push” for copyright to be enforced, especially regarding sex and violence.

“Like no baby murder songs plz,” she wrote.

The singer added that while she hates adding more lines, she also prefers to avoid political topics.

Grimes was inspired to explore AI creativity after a viral song featuring the simulated voices of Drake and The Weeknd.

The song, titled Heart on My Sleeve, has been played a lot on TikTok and Twitter. TMZ reported, adding that the track “was made with nothing but the use of AI programming.”

Grimes shares a year-old daughter, Exa Dark Sideræl Musk, with tech billionaire Elon Musk. Last month, Grimes revealed that she calls her daughter Y for short.

She and the Tesla CEO are also the parents of 2-year-old X Æ A-12, nicknamed X, whose name was later changed to X Æ A-Xii because California law prohibits the use of numbers in a legal name.

Elon has eight other children — 19-year-old twins Griffin and Xavier (now Vivian Jenna Wilson) and 17-year-old triplets Damian, Saxon, and Kai — from a previous marriage to Justine Wilson.

They also previously welcomed a son named Nevada Alexander Musk in 2002, but they died of sudden infant death syndrome (SIDS) at just 10 weeks.

More recently, he welcomed twins with Shivon Zilis, Neuralink’s director of operations and special projects, in November 2021 before his second child arrived with Grimes.

He and Grimes began publicly dating in May 2018, but had an on-again, off-again relationship until they finally broke up after the birth of their daughter in March 2022.
