Ella Cutler: WA cop said to be coming home after being left in coma by cliff fall in Croatia

The family of an Australian police officer who fell 11 meters from a cliff in Croatia, leaving her in a medically induced coma, are hopeful she will be able to return home within days.

Western Australia police officer Ella Cutler fell from a cliff near Pile, northwest of Dubrovnik, in the early hours of August 26.

She had been drinking and was with a 34-year-old man when the pair suddenly fell over a waist-high wall, leaving Ms Cutler with devastating injuries including fractures to her spine, head, limbs and ribs.

She was rushed to hospital in critical condition and has been in Croatia since then.

In an important update on the 25-year-old’s condition, Ms Cutler’s family announced on Friday that she could return home next week.

“There are a number of medical and logistical factors that must be in place before Ella can fly home to Washington,” her family said in a statement.

“We are hopeful that this will be sooner rather than later and we are optimistic that it will take days, not weeks.

“What we do know is that Ella’s return home is now possible thanks to the support she received from her ‘blue family’ and the WA community.”

Mrs Cutler can return home after a massive fundraiser resulted in $530,000 being secured for her medical bills.

An air ambulance needed to take her home to Perth alone costs $400,000.

Tokyo Marine is the underlying insurer for the travel insurance sold to Ms Cutler by insurance company RAC.

Ms Cutler’s insurance claim was initially rejected because she had been drinking when she fell.

“We deeply sympathize with Ms Cutler and her family at this difficult time,” a Tokyo Marine spokesperson previously told Daily Mail Australia.

“We can confirm that we have provided Ms Cutler and her family with a range of support since the incident occurred.

‘We are currently assessing an open claim and look forward to working with them towards a positive outcome. Due to privacy concerns, we cannot provide further information about their specific policy or claim.”

Mrs Cutler was traveling through Europe on holiday when her trip came to a terrible end after her near-fatal fall, which also punctured her lungs.

The man Ms Cutler was with at the time suffered a broken leg but is recovering after undergoing surgery.

Doctors had told the woman’s family there was only a five percent chance she would survive.

Although she can now breathe on her own, Ms Cutler’s brother Joshua says she faces a long road to recovery, including several months of rehabilitation.

Andrijana Biskup, from the Dubrovnik-Neretva police, confirmed that the couple were hugging or kissing when the fall occurred and said alcohol may have played a role.

The local hospital confirmed that blood alcohol tests showed the man had a reading of 0.2 – four times the legal driving limit in Australia – while the woman had a reading of 0.3, or six times the legal driving limit.

The couple were said to have been on a night out at the time of the accident in Dubrovnik’s Old Town, which is packed with tourists every summer.
