Netflix has shared the first official shot of Elizabeth Debicki’s Princess of Wales in season five of The Crown — wearing a blue mini dress with a plunging neckline in a scene that depicts one of her last public appearances ever.
The streaming platform posted a series of photos on the show’s official social media pages, including one of Imelda Staunton taking on the role of Queen Elizabeth II.
In one of the photos, released today, Debicki looked unbelievably like Diana while wearing a bold blue dress.
The dress was nearly identical to the one the princess wore at a 1995 Serpentine Gallery fundraising gala in Hyde Park, two years before her tragic death.
However, the scene shows one of Diana’s last public appearances, when Princess Diana attended a royal gala performance by the English National Ballet’s Swan Lake in June 1997.
The upcoming season of The Crown has been touted as the most controversial yet, as it will look at the breakup of King Charles’ marriage to Diana.

The photo shared today shows one of Diana’s last public appearances.
However, the outfit the late princess wore in real life has become one of the late princess’ most iconic fashion statements.
For unknown reasons, the 31-year-old Australian actress is wearing a copy of a Catherine Walker halter dress Diana wore to a party two years earlier.
The princess wore a turquoise sequined dress by Jacques Azagury at the event.
Elizabeth Debicki is Diana’s doppelganger on the red carpet scene, but the show’s producers chose not to replicate the princess’s Jacques Azagury turquoise sequined dress.
Also missing from the Royal Albert Hall scene is the pearl and diamond necklace that became so synonymous with the engagement that it was sold at auction 20 years later as the ‘Swan Lake necklace’ for £10 million.
Diana’s appearance came a few weeks before her death in a car accident in Paris on August 31.
She loved ballet and dance and was patroness of the English National Ballet at the time.
Filming of the scenes for the Netflix drama took place at the Lyceum theater.
Series five focuses on the breakup of Diana’s marriage to Charles, played by Dominic West, and in other depictions Miss Debicki – who replaced Emma Corrin in the role – can be seen alongside Salim Dau, 71, as Harrods owner Mohamed Fayed, father of Diana’s lover Dodi.
The hit show has been criticized for being insensitive to a grieving King Charles, as they will show his crumbling marriage to Diana in “painful” detail.

Prince Charles, who is played by Dominic West, and his girlfriend, then-Camilla Parker Bowles who is played by Olivia Williams, could be seen outside laughing as they appear to be watching a fireworks display.
Another photo shows Princess Diana, Prince Charles (Dominic West), Prince William and Harry on a family boat trip.
Alongside the images, Netflix announced, “Welcome to the 90s. A first look at season five of The Crown, which comes out on November 9.

The Princess and Dodi were involved in a car accident in August 1997 while driving through the Pont de l’Alma tunnel in Paris, France. They later died from injuries sustained in the accident.
The breakdown of the relationship between Charles and Diana will be at the center of the new series, portraying the then Prince of Wales as ‘close-minded, cold and deceitful’.
The fourth series, which aired last November, told the story of the early romance between Charles and Diana.
It was announced last year that Elizabeth Debicki would take over from Emma Corrin and play Diana for the fifth and sixth series, which will cover Diana’s death in 1997.

The Netflix show is believed to be currently shooting scenes depicting the month before the tragic accident, when Diana’s sons were famously taking their mother and her beau for a vacation.
The show’s sixth season is its last, with the last two series dealing with the royal family spanning the 1990s to 2003, including Diana’s death.
The Crown resumed production of the sixth and final series in Barcelona last month after filming was interrupted a day after the death of Queen Elizabeth II.
Undoubtedly, The Crown sticks to a strict filming schedule to ensure its sixth and final series is released on time by Netflix, having been pushed back by a daylong hiatus following The Queen’s passing.
