Elderly woman, 73, allegedly stabbed from behind as she walked home alone after visiting family

An elderly woman has been rushed to hospital after being stabbed several times on her walk home.
Police said the 73-year-old had left a relative’s home around 7pm on Tuesday and was walking home on Mundy St in Geelong, southwest of Melbourne.
When the woman reached the intersection of Bellarine St, a man allegedly came up behind her and stabbed her several times before leaving.

The woman managed to get help from a nearby residence and was rushed to hospital with serious injuries, where she remained Wednesday morning.
In the aftermath of the alleged attack, police arrested a man in South Geelong on Tuesday.
A 32-year-old man is in custody and is assisting police in their investigation.
Police told 3AW investigators that the man was not connected to the relative’s household.
