The incident occurred at Ilous Ellis Park, near Ave. M and 13th St, at 5:20 p.m. and was sparked by some kind of disagreement, the sheriff’s office said.

“A lot of people were shot, it looks like based on our initial investigation here at the scene there was some type of disagreement between two parties and unfortunately they chose to settle that with guns,” said St. Lucie County Deputy Chief Brian Hester. he told News4JAX.

“It was massive chaos, as you can imagine, when the shots rang out,” he said. “There were over a thousand people here at the event, and when the shots rang out, people were running in all directions.”

“It’s really sad at a celebration of someone who stood for peace and equality that a disagreement results in the use of guns and violence to resolve that disagreement, and that’s what really saddens me about what happened here,” Hester said.

“And then so many innocent people who were hurt or injured who were also not part of the disagreement.”

The sheriff’s office said it had several leads. Dozens of agents in the area were working to find the shooter or shooters.
