Eight people, including a four-month-old baby, have been injured after a car drove into a busy cafe terrace in Fuerteventura.
The atrocity occurred when a rental car in the tourist hotspot of Corralejo went off the road, plowed through the terrace full of bar patrons and crashed into a storefront.
Sources told local media the vehicle was traveling between 80 and 100 kilometers per hour as it left Avenida Nuestra Señora del Carmen and headed towards the packed terrace.
Several people were taken to Las Palmas Hospital on the island of Gran Canaria for emergency surgery. The child also suffered serious injuries and was rushed to the Gran Canaria Children’s and Maternity Clinic.
Another minor, age five, suffered moderate trauma along with two men, ages 44 and 50.
It remains unclear why the driver – a tourist whose nationality has not yet been revealed – lost control of the car.
Police suspect he may have suffered a heart attack or other medical emergency behind the wheel, as emergency services have confirmed to local newspaper Canarian Weekly that he is one of two people rushed to hospital.
