Manchester City have suffered a major blow in the title race after Ederson went off injured in the win against Nottingham Forest.

At the City Ground on Sunday, the Brazilian made his 40th start of the season in all competitions but was replaced by Stefan Ortega at half-time.

Goals from Josko Gvardiol and Erling Haaland were enough for the champions to claim all three points against Nuno Espirito Santo’s side, but Ederson’s injury at such a crucial moment in the title race undoubtedly dampened the celebrations.

Although the move was initially thought to be little more than a precautionary measure, Pep Guardiola issued a worrying prognosis on the condition of his number one goalkeeper after the match.

“It doesn’t look good,” the Spaniard admitted. “We’ll talk to the doctor tomorrow.”

City supporters’ fears will no doubt have only been exacerbated by Ederson after the match

The former Benfica star has only recently recovered from a thigh injury that forced him off early in the second half during the club’s 1-1 draw with Liverpool last month.

The setback saw Ederson miss the stalemate with Arsenal in the Emirates at the end of March and the club’s Champions League quarter-final first leg with Real Madrid.

In his absence, Ortega is likely to come between the posts, having already made 17 appearances in all competitions this season as the club’s regular cup goalkeeper.

Micah Richards spoke to the pundits after City’s win on Sunday, insisting Ortega is more than capable of filling in if called upon.

“I think he’s been excellent.” The defender-turned-expert said this to Sky Sports.

“When Ederson got injured he didn’t let the team down, so I wouldn’t worry about that.

‘Maybe just his play from the back is not the same quality as Ederson, but he has been a solid player.’
