EDEN CONFIDENTIAL: Queen consort asks King Charles to honor ex-roommate Virginia Carrington, despite once describing Camilla as a ‘total slob’

The queen consort has asked King Charles to approve an honor for her former roommate, Virginia Carington, despite the old friend once describing Camilla as a “total slob”.

Camilla Shand was a fun-loving 17-year-old when she and Virginia, daughter of the late Foreign Secretary Lord Carrington, rented a two-bedroom flat in Belgravia together.

Virginia’s remark is recalled by author Jessica Jayne in her book The Duchess Of Cornwall: Camilla’s Story And Secrets. “Coming home, she would just throw the clothes on the floor and leave it,” Jayne writes. Camilla’s bedroom always looked as if a bomb had been dropped on it.

In his first New Year’s Honors list, the King approved the CVO grant to Virginia, whose brother Rupert is now Lord Great Chamberlain.

Around 1965, Camilla and Virginia rented a flat on London’s exclusive Edbury Street, following the queen consort’s etiquette studies at Mon Fertile finishing school near Geneva..

Writer Gyles Brandreth also described the scene: “Virginia was pretty neat and organized and Camilla drove her crazy, in the best possible way. Virginia once told me, ‘You know, Camilla has this inability to hang anything on a hanger.

And he has an aversion to cleaning fluids of any description. You should see the state of the bathroom when she’s been in it.”

The New Year Honors List dates back to the reign of Queen Victoria and celebrates figures who have contributed to society.

Virginia was among many other honorees, including members of England’s Lionesses soccer team for their Euro Cup win this summer and Grayson Perry for his art.

Just three years ago, Camilla visited Westminster Abbey along with several politicians following the death of Virginia’s father, Mr Carrington.

Unfortunately he passed away after his 99th birthday in July 2018 and was the last surviving member of Winston Churchill’s postwar cabinet.

Lord Carrington was also the last Conservative Foreign Secretary to resign until Boris Johnson.
