Eddie Redmayne’s latest character is a 1970s icon, just like the flared trousers he wore to the Berlin premiere of The Day of the Jackal on Tuesday night.
The new series, based on the novel by Frederick Forsyth, is a modern interpretation of the classic 1973 political thriller starring Edward Fox.
The 42-year-old actor wore a period wardrobe as he posed on the red carpet in a retro oversized suit, dark shirt and white tie.
In the show, Redmayne, who plays the elusive killer the Jackal, says he was jealous of some of his character’s steely qualities.
He said: ‘I wish I were as refined, impeccably groomed and meticulous. I have none of the Jackal’s mercy. I’m s****y in a crisis. He becomes cooler during a crisis; I’m getting sweaty.’

When the Jackal successfully assassinates a prominent political figure, he unleashes a frantic cat-and-mouse chase between himself and MI6 agent Bianca, played by Lashana Lynch.
The Bond actress, 36, co-executive producer of the series, also appeared on the red carpet at the Zoo Palast, Berlin.
Lynch, who is heavily pregnant, wore a flowing black Balenciaga dress with a giant bow that hid her growing baby bump.
The star and her actor husband, Zackary Momoh, 36, announced the pregnancy last month when she debuted her baby bump at the show’s New York premiere.
During an interview with Vogue, the expectant mother talked about her maternity wardrobe on the red carpet.
She explains, “I feel comfortable and at ease, but also in control of myself. Some red carpet dresses, even though they are beautiful and stunning, feel like you are putting on a dress another part of yourself, whereas here I feel like I’m celebrating the female figure.’
