Channel 10’s broadcast partners accidentally aired an uncolored conversation between Melbourne Cup presenters Eddie McGuire and former Australian Idol star Rob ‘Millsy’ Mills.

In the UK, where the race was shown at 4 a.m. local time, Sky Sports Racing broadcast Channel 10’s coverage without ads, instead broadcasting a static image as viewers in Australia watched ads.

But the system wasn’t perfect – with a conversation between McGuire, Mills and journalist Tara Rushton shown inadvertently.

The trio ignores the golden rule that broadcasters should always assume the microphone is on.

When the static image that read ‘Lexus Melbourne Cup Day’ disappeared, Eddie McGuire was heard saying, ‘Hello, Rob Mills.’

Rushton and Mills said hello back in a place they clearly didn’t think was being broadcast live.

McGuire then praised himself and the station’s coverage of the day, saying, “We’re on fire. Great opening segments.’

Mills agreed, saying it was “a great day,” then pointed out the window from their broadcast area.

“Clouds are coming, how long do you give it (before it rains),” Mills told Maguire.

“What do you feel in your waters,” Rushton adds.

And then the conversation takes a turn for the rough.

“Mate, if Millsy stands still, the sun will shine. We know where the sun shines.’

Mills and Rushton smile and thank McGuire for the comment, taking in the joke, but with no idea it’s going live.

“Thank you so much, I appreciate that,” Mills said.

The trio then begin chatting about tips for the Melbourne Cup before the static returned and their conversation faded.

Gold Trip won the 2022 Melbourne Cup and stormed home down the straight in a furious sprint.

Emissary came in second and High Emocean third.

Gold Trip’s jockey Mark Zahra admitted that the final moments as the horse shot to the finish line were nerve-wracking.

‘[I was thinking] just fuck off, no one comes near me,” he said.
