Eddie Jones’s NRL targets revealed as Wallabies boss lines up big moves

Operation RE-UNION! Eddie Jones’ NRL goals are revealed as the new Wallabies boss devises daring moves for rugby league’s biggest stars… so, which Premiership winner is on his hit list?

Rugby Australia’s code war with the NRL looks unstoppable after a list of the Wallabies’ goals was revealed.

The shortlist of ‘Re-Union’ targets – players who currently ply their trade in the NRL but could be tempted to move to the union – was revealed by The Australian, with Eddie Jones unhappy with just praising from rugby league’s Joseph Sua’ali’i.

And the most high-profile target on the ‘Re-Union’ list is Penrith superstar Nathan Cleary, and his inclusion is sure to set alarm bells ringing within the NRL.

“Nathan Cleary was not on the original list as we thought he would be untouchable, but he said he would be open to a move,” said Hamish McLennan, head of Rugby Australia.

“I forgot he grew up in New Zealand, so he appreciates the game and gets it. Imagine him running from 85,000 people wearing Wallaby gold at Stade de France. Stunning.’

He obviously signed a new contract with the Panthers last year, which expires in 2027, but he has previously admitted he is open to a move to the Wallabies.

“I have great admiration and respect for union players, especially growing up in New Zealand, it’s so big there,” Cleary told Nine News when asked if he would consider a move.

“At the moment I am quite happy with where I am. Somewhere on the track maybe (I’d consider switching).’

Brisbane Broncos’ Payne Haas was linked with a switch earlier this week, with reports suggesting the striker has been in ‘secret talks’ with Rugby Australia for two years.

Haas’ name is also on the ‘Re-Union’ list, alongside Cameron Murray, Angus Crichton and Will Penisini.

“Payne could definitely wear Wallaby gold,” McLennan told News Corp.

“We really like Payne. He comes from a strong rugby background and it’s probably time he spread his wings and did something really special.

The Broncos are great, but playing for the Wallabies against the British Lions would be even better.

“Playing rugby helps Payne see the world.”
