Eddie Jones rolls the dice on least experienced Wallabies team since 2003 for Rugby World Cup opener with three shock changes and the most unlikely of debutants

Eddie Jones rolls the dice for the least experienced Wallabies team since 2003 for the Rugby World Cup opener with three shocking changes and the most unlikely debutant

Wallabies coach Eddie Jones has caused a major squad surprise by appointing Ben Donaldson at fullback for Australia’s World Cup opener against Georgia.

Andrew Kellaway has worn the number 15 jersey in the past three tests, but Donaldson’s kicking ability has proved crucial.

It will also be the first time Donaldson – usually a fly-half – has played fullback for the Wallabies.

Andrew (Kellaway) is fit for selection. We just felt that Donno gives us the coverage we need,” said Jones.

“He has been training with us for six to eight weeks, mostly as a full-back instead of ten.

“His goals are of a high standard, which obviously gives us two options for the game.

“Now that Nic White is off the bench, we’re getting three for the game. That is an area that we had to strengthen, hence the selection.’

Elsewhere, Marika Koroibete got the nod from Suliasi Vunivalu for one of the wing spots, and Samu Kerevi will start at center center after overcoming a hand injury.

The attacker package, which was beaten by a large margin by France last year, remains unchanged.

Jones’ side is also the least experienced Australian team at a World Cup since the 2003 game against Namibia in Adelaide, with a total of 343 Test caps.

17 of the 23 selected players will play their first World Cup match.
