Eddie Howe has hit back at mocking remarks about Newcastle’s purchasing power, insisting ‘money is no guarantee of success’.

Liverpool manager Jurgen Klopp recently included the Magpies in a list of clubs he believes have ‘no ceiling’ due to the wealth at their disposal after last year’s 80 per cent takeover by Saudi Arabia.

Newcastle have invested heavily – at a cost of around £210 million – in the two transfer windows since Amanda Staveley’s consortium took control of St James’ Park.

But head coach Howe has maintained that money alone is not the only reason the club is currently fourth in the Premier League.

He said, ‘Money is no guarantee of success. It certainly helps, but it doesn’t guarantee anything.

“You’re really bad at recruiting and that costs you a lot of money these days, so it’s a mix of things.”

Howe will be in office for a year on November 8, but remains in the early stages of his mission.

He said, ‘Time flies. It’s unbelievable to think that the months have gone by that it almost resulted in a year for me here. We enjoyed it, but it’s over so quickly.

“I feel like it’s an element to just start with the team and we have so much more to accomplish and do. But if I were here a year from now, I’d probably say the exact same thing.’
