Eddie Hearn revealed that Jermaine Franklin’s trainer taunted Tony Bellew at ringside before the two were separated by security following Anthony Joshua’s return to the ring on Saturday night.
Footage of the incident showed Bellew and a member of Franklin’s entourage engaging in a heated conversation at ringside following the end of the fight.
Franklin’s trainer, Lorenzo Reynolds, an undefeated former professional boxer, can be seen being physically restrained while trying to tackle Bellew before a large security fixture, and the BBC’s Steve Bunce, intervened to prevent the incident from escalating.
Speaking after the event, Matchroom Boxing president Eddie Hearn revealed that the incident was sparked by Reynolds’ yelling at former cruiserweight champion Bellew, who was providing analysis as part of the broadcast for DAZN.
‘I asked him, I think he just said that [Franklin’s] Coach went for AJ or something, and he yelled something, and then he yelled something at Bellew. He’s probably the wrong person to yell at.
Footage showed Tony Bellew involved in a heated incident with Jermaine Franklin’s trainer Lorenzo Reynolds following the return of Anthony Joshua on Saturday.
Bellew was taken away by security while Reynolds was restrained during the melee.
Tempers also flared in the ring after the final bell following an incident between the wrestlers.
Despite emerging with a decision win over the American in a sometimes convincing clash, Joshua seemed to lack the killer instinct that had characterized his early career.
After the fight reached the end of the 12th round, chaotic scenes unfolded inside the ring between the two fighters, forcing security to intervene.
At the O2 Arena, Joshua made his first return to the ring since suffering defeat at the hands of Oleksandr Usyk for the second time in August, when he went on a bizarre tirade after the final bell.
Eddie Hearn then revealed that Reynolds had been taunting the former Cruiserweight Champion.
Joshua won a unanimous decision against Franklin, in his first fight since losing to Oleksandr Usyk in August.
On Saturday, however, the 2012 Olympic champion was more subdued on the microphone after the fight, even after the ringside incident with his opponent.
Inside the ring, there is a different energy, so I apologize to those who are watching. Respect to Jermaine, Eddie [Hearn]Thank you for this opportunity. Fans, thank you too,” she added.
‘It was important to win. Jermaine has a good duck and dive style, someone else from Britain will probably knock him out; As for him, he did well.
I should have knocked him out, but it’s done. To the next. He’s here to prove himself, not turn around. I wish I could have knocked him out.
