‘He’s done brilliantly’: Eddie Hearn praises Jake Paul for the career he’s built after his split decision loss to Tommy Fury… but suggests he’s reached his limit, insisting ‘you just don’t realize Turn around at 23 and you say ‘I’m going to be a professional boxer”

Eddie Hearn praised Jake Paul for the career he’s built, but questioned whether he’s reached his limit following his split decision loss to Tommy Fury on Sunday.

Fury was the rightful winner in the end, with the judges scoring the fight 76-73, 76-73, 74-75 in his favor on a dramatic night in Saudi Arabia.

The fight between the former British Love Island contestant and a YouTuber-turned-boxer was the result of more than two years of social media warfare that culminated in a showdown only on the third question.

Fury had to pull out of both previously staged contests and was bombarded with claims that he was afraid to fight the seemingly less decorated boxer in Paul.

Despite being beaten for the first time in his short boxing career, Paul managed to drop Fury in the final round.

Speaking about Paul’s efforts, Matchroom promoter Hearn said DAZN: ‘For the level of experience he has, which is nil, I think he has done incredibly well.

‘For what he’s done, he’s done really well. He’s trained hard, he’s built the fundamentals, it’s tough, but you don’t turn around at 23 and say ‘I’m going to be a professional boxer’ and then box at any level. For what he’s had, he’s made it brilliant.

It comes just a week after Hearn disagreed with the WBC’s decision to name Pablo as a world ranked fighter in the cruiserweight division.

The WBC confirmed before the fight that if Paul had beaten Fury, he would move into their top 40 ranking.

Hearn disagreed with the decision, stating that the WBC was only allowing it because of the hype the social media giant generates.

‘Sometimes, government bodies also have to live in that commercial world. Tommy Fury is a proper fighter and Jake Paul would make a statement if he won that fight,” he told iFL TV.

Hearn added: “It’s not a statement that he can challenge for a world title, but ultimately there’s a bit of hype there.”

Hearn previously disagreed with the WBC's decision to rank Paul in the top 40, had he beaten Fury.

‘It’s right? Not precisely. Because there are fighters who deserve to be in the top 15 much more than Jake Paul, but it is the world we live in.

Hearn had predicted that Paul would beat Fury by knockout, suggesting that Problem Child had mentally broken his opponent.

However, it would not be the case that Fury ultimately triumphs on points. Talk of a rematch sprang up immediately, with Paul suggesting that he would fight Fury again before anyone else, including YouTuber KSI.

“I sure need to get this one back and KSI still has a real opponent to fight, so we don’t know his real skill level,” he said in his post-fight press conference.

“Obviously it’s a massive fight, but I’m coming back for this rematch.” I just talked to Tommy in the medical room and he said “come on let’s do it again”.
