The album was inspired by a difficult time in Ed’s life, as while he was writing and recording, he experienced the death of his best friend, and his wife Cherry Seaborn was diagnosed with cancer.

In an Instagram post announcing his new album, the singer wrote: “I had been working on Subtract for ten years, trying to make the perfect acoustic album, writing and recording hundreds of songs with a clear vision of what I thought it would be. must be.

Then, in early 2022, a series of events changed my life, my mental health, and ultimately the way I looked at music and art.

Writing songs is my therapy. It helps me understand my feelings. I wrote without thinking about what the songs would be, I just wrote what tumbled out. And in just over a week, I’ve replaced ten years of work with my deepest, darkest thoughts.

‘Within a month my pregnant wife was told she had a tumour, and she could not be treated until after the birth.

“My best friend Jamal, a brother of mine, died suddenly and I was in court defending my integrity and career as a songwriter.

“I was in a spiral of fear, depression and anxiety. I felt like I was drowning, with my head submerged, looking up but unable to break through for air.

“As an artist, I didn’t feel I could credibly put out a body of work that didn’t accurately represent where I am and how I should be expressing myself at this point in my life.”

Earlier this week, the Shape Of You hitmaker burst into tears during the performance of his new album Subtract.

During an intimate show with Apple Music Live at London’s Eventim Apollo on Wednesday, the singer, 32, dedicated two songs to his late friend Jamal Edwards as he discussed his grief, revealing: “I’m still not over it, I want to not be.’

In February 2022, Ed was devastated when his close friend Jamal Edwards tragically died after suffering cardiac arrest caused by using cocaine and drinking alcohol.

He played the album in full for the live concert series for the first time and was joined by a 12-piece band, including Aaron Dessner of The National.

While addressing the audience ahead of Eyes Closed and Life Goes On, Ed began, “Last time I was in this room was with my friend Jamal, to see a comedy show, and I haven’t been here since .

“The first time I played this song I cried when I introduced it, I cried at the beginning, I cried at the end and… I’m going to cry now.”

Bursting into tears, he wiped his face with a towel and continued, “I found this very cathartic to put out.

“I always say these songs are mine until I release them, and then they’re yours.

“It’s heartbreaking when people share this song with them [Instagram] Stories, and relate to them, but it’s something everyone experiences.

“It’s just being an adult and this shit just happens, everyone’s going through it.”

Prior to Life Goes On, he continued, “I sing songs all the time, but these are real life things.

The album was also inspired by Ed’s wife Cherry Seaborn (pictured) cancer diagnosis

“When the Jamal died, I felt like I wanted the world to stop, just like when the Queen died.”

Last month, the British singer announced that his wife Cherry had been diagnosed with a tumor during her pregnancy with their second child.

The couple welcomed daughter Jupiter in May 2022 and are also parents to Lyra Antarctica, two.

The singer and his high school sweetheart kept the pregnancy a secret, but he has now revealed that the couple have been plagued by “anxiety, depression and anxiety” as Cherry was diagnosed with a tumor she was unable to treat until after giving birth.
