The future of a major nuclear power station in North Wales is in doubt as Ed Miliband accelerates Britain’s transition to net zero emissions.
The construction of a third large-scale gigawatt power station at Wylfa in Anglesey could be affected after the Energy Secretary launched a review of nuclear energy plans, which includes a target for a quarter of the UK’s electricity to come from domestic nuclear power by 2050.
Former Conservative Party energy minister Claire Coutinho said scrapping Wylfa would be “total economic madness”.
This follows warnings from oil and gas companies that Miliband’s tougher approach to North Sea natural gas extraction could cost the UK £13 billion.
Plans for a new nuclear power station in Wales were confirmed by the then government in May.
The site was expected to generate enough electricity to power 6 million homes for 60 years.
Possible changes to the Wylfa plan could include the construction of several small modular reactors, the Telegraph reported.
Energy Secretary Lord Hunt said: ‘No decisions have been taken yet.’
