An Ecuador supporter attending the opening game of the World Cup in Qatar was involved in a brief altercation with supporters of the host nation at the stadium on Sunday.

Qatar suffered defeat in their first ever World Cup match as Ecuador took two-nil wins in front of a packed crowd at Al Khor’s Al Bayt Stadium.

Former Everton striker Enner Valencia scored twice in the first half to secure an important group win for the South American side in Qatar.

But an Ecuador supporter who had traveled to the game was quickly berated by Qatar supporters who sat beside him as he celebrated his team’s success.

A video posted to Twitter shows the fan dressed in Ecuador’s yellow national team jersey standing and singing among a crowd of what appear to be Qatar fans.

As the youthful-looking supporter points and sings to opponents attending the match alongside him, he finds himself on the receiving end of a number of irritated Qataris.

The video, which has been viewed more than 20 million times on the social media platform to date, appears to show the Ecuador fan that he should sit down and shut up.

The gentlemen and fellow supporters then try to appease the situation by telling everyone to ‘calm down and relax’.

Efforts to ease tensions seemed to have worked, as a follow-up video showed everyone in good spirits after the event took place.

The Ecuador supporter sat among the fans involved in the heated moment as he told the camera that “passion sometimes upsets people.”

He added: “But we come together for sport, sport brings people together, we are very friendly with each other and I wish Qatar the best.

“It’s been a great World Cup so far and you guys are so friendly, I love it.”

Ecuador will rest before preparing to face the Netherlands on Friday, while Qatar will hope to improve against Senegal in the group’s other meeting.
