EastEnders star Danny Dyer ‘set to reprise an iconic role’ a year after he walked away from the BBC soap

Danny Dyer will reportedly reprise his role as Tommy Johnson in The Football Factory 2.

The actor, 46, is best known for playing Mick Carter in BBC soap EastEnders, but before becoming the landlord of the Queen Vic he played a football hooligan in the 2004 drama.

Ahead of the film's 20th anniversary, insiders have claimed that production on the sequel will begin just after Christmas and that it is a real 'passion project' for the former soap star.

A source said The sun: 'It's full steam ahead for Football Factory 2 and filming should start in January.

“The hope is that they can turn it around quickly enough so that it comes out in 2024 – in time for the 20th anniversary.”

They added: 'It's a real passion project for Danny, who can't wait to sink his teeth into the role again.

In The Football Factory, Danny plays a member of the Chelsea Firm whose life revolves around drink, drugs and violence, but whose increasing nightmares make him question his life choice.

The film – which was loosely based on John King's novel – received negative reviews from critics at the time, but has become something of a cult classic.

It has been reported that the sequel has the working title Marching Powder, a nod to the film's copious use of cocaine.

MailOnline has contacted Danny's representatives for comment.

From 2013 to 2022, Danny became a fan favorite on EastEnders for his portrayal of Mick Carter alongside his on-screen wife Linda (Kellie Bright).

The couple later split and he married Albert Square villain Janine Butcher (Charlie Brooks), but returned to Linda after discovering her lies.

But he left the series last Christmas in a storyline that left viewers wondering whether he was alive or dead.

Danny has since starred in Channel 5 drama Heat and now fronts the Sorted with the Dyers podcast with his daughter and former Love Island winner Dani.

But discussing the reason for his departure from the soap, he recently explained that he left the show due to his dissatisfaction with the scripts.

He said: 'The first few years we destroyed it. It was powerful. The viewer listened to us more than to these damn politicians.'

He added: “I was blessed with some great storylines, some of them.

“They screwed it up towards the end. It's a shame it had to end, but I'd damn well have had enough.'
