Earthquake rattles New York: Magnitude 2.2 quake ‘shakes houses’ in parts of state in early hours
New York was rocked by a rare earthquake this morning, with residents reporting homes in parts of the state were shaking.
Seismologists said the magnitude 2.2 was reported in the early hours of Friday morning, with the sound of a “loud rumble” also being heard.
According to the United States Geological Survey, the earthquake struck about a mile southwest of Hastings-on-Hudson.
Locals across the region took to social media to say they had felt the quake, with people reporting quakes in the Bronx to the south and New Jersey across the Hudson River.
Natalie Pasquarella, a reporter for WNBC News, asked her followers on Twitter, “Just woke up to a huge rumble…our house shook in Bergen County, anyone else?”

In a follow-up, she wrote, Not sure what that was! I’ve never felt an earthquake before, but – phew, that was strange! Our home in NJ shook and heard a loud rumble.
“Kids slept right through it…” she added.
Other users also asked if people in the area had felt the quake.
“Uhhh was just there at New York earthquake because [what] was that?’ asked one. Another asked, “I think I may have just had an earthquake. Does anyone in the New York New Jersey area feel/hear that?’
One person said ‘something shook the floor for about two seconds’.
Other New York residents said they heard a rumble and wondered if it could be an explosion.
New York earthquake? Police say they received multiple calls, like mine, reporting what felt and sounded like a massive explosion,” one user wrote.
As of 3 a.m. local time, there were no reports of damage or injury, and speculation of an explosion appeared unfounded.
News of the quake comes just months after a 3.8-magnitude earthquake hit New York state in February.
The quake’s epicenter was 1.3 miles from West Seneca, with shock waves reaching Lackawanna, Buffalo, Niagara Falls and Tonawanda.
Again, there were no reports of significant damage to injuries.
