Earthquake strikes Port Hedland – with dozens waking up to the tremor

An earthquake with a magnitude of 3.6 has struck Port Hedland at a depth of 10 kilometers.

Dozens of people in Western Australia woke up to the earthquake that struck the state’s Pilbara region at 4.49am local time on Wednesday.

“Was in a deep sleep and woke me up, not sure if it was a thud or an earthquake down south,” a local wrote on social media.

“I definitely felt that, I thought a train had crashed,” wrote a second.

A third commented: ‘Yes, I heard it more than felt it. And then a few smaller ones. Pets go crazy’.

Weak tremors may have been felt in Boodarie 6km from the epicentre, South Hedland about 10km and Wedgefield 14km away.

There is no tsunami threat to Australia, the Bureau of Meteorology confirmed.
