Earthquake hits Melbourne, causing confusion: ‘Loud, explosion-like sound’
- Earthquake with a magnitude of 2.3 on the Richter scale hit the east of the city
Melbourne was rocked by a small earthquake on Tuesday morning – with authorities recording a magnitude 2.3 quake in the city’s eastern suburbs.
The earthquake struck near Ferntree Gully at about 11.15am on Tuesday.
Several residents wondered if they could imagine the ground rumbling beneath them.
“Anyone else in Melbourne feeling the earthquake recently?” one resident asked on Twitter.
“WAS THAT AN EARTHQUAKE?” asked another.
The earthquake occurred around 11.15am on Tuesday near Ferntree Gully in eastern Melbourne
“It went so fast it could have been a thunderstorm, but I swear the roof was shaking.”
Earthquake monitoring organization, the Seismology Research Center said the earthquake was detected not far from Dandenong Ranges National Park.
A resident of Montrose, east of town, reported feeling “rumbling, rattling, and a loud explosion-like sound.”
A Belgrave resident said ‘it was so small I thought it was just a lorry being unloaded’.
The Bureau of Meteorology said there is no tsunami threat for Australia.
