External Affairs Minister S Jaishankar held a meeting on Sunday with Tanzanian President Samia Suluhu Hassan. He thanked her for appreciating Prime Minister Narendra Modi’s initiative to include the African Union as a permanent member of the G20.
In a post shared on X, formerly known as Twitter, Jaishankar said, “Honored to visit the President of Tanzania @SuluhuSamia on her state visit to India. I thanked her for her appreciation of Prime Minister @narendramodi’s initiative for permanent membership of the African Union in the G20. I appreciate her guidance in expanding our bilateral relationship in so many areas.”
In his opening remarks at the G20 summit, Prime Minister Modi invited African Union Chairperson Azali Assoumani to take a seat at the G20 leaders’ table as a permanent member.
Earlier in the day, Tanzanian President Samia Suluhu Hassan arrived in Delhi on a state visit to India. Union Minister of State for Education Annapurna Devi received her in New Delhi.
She was welcomed with a performance of traditional folk dances at the airport. Official Spokesperson of the Ministry of External Affairs Arindam Bagchi said that this is the first visit of Samia Suluhu Hassan to India after taking office.

Tanzanian President @SuluhuSamia arrives on a state visit to India. This is her first visit to India since taking over as President’s office. On his arrival in India, Tanzanian President Samia Suluhu Hassan said, “I landed in New Delhi for a state visit at the invitation of India’s national leaders. For Tanzanians, India is our extended family, a strategic ally and one of our largest bilateral trade partners. I look forward to a productive visit to expand trade and investment between India and Tanzania, a foundation for prosperity for the people of our two countries.”
Samiya Suluhu Hassan is visiting India at the invitation of President Draupadi Murmu. On Monday, she will meet President Murmu and Prime Minister Narendra Modi.
A press release from the Ministry of External Affairs stated, “During his stay in New Delhi, President Samia Suluhu Hasan will meet the President. She will be welcomed with a ceremony in the courtyard of the Rashtrapati Bhawan and will then hold a detailed bilateral dialogue with the Prime Minister. A State Banquet will also be hosted by the President in honor of President Samia Suluhu Hassan.”
On October 10, the President of Tanzania will participate in a business and investment forum in New Delhi. She will leave India on October 11. The MEA in the press release said that a presidential visit from Tanzania is taking place after more than 8 years.
According to the MEA, Samiya Suluhu Hassan’s visit will further enhance and strengthen the “historic and friendly relations” between India and Tanzania.
On Saturday, Tanzania’s Minister of Foreign Affairs and East African Cooperation in January, Yusuf Makamba, said that during Tanzanian President Samia Suluhu Hassan’s visit to India, the two countries will elevate their defense relationship to a comprehensive strategic partnership.
“In this visit, we will elevate our relationship to a comprehensive strategic partnership with four pillars. One is a development corporation. Two, maritime security, three, defense corporation and four, trade investment…,” the Tanzanian foreign minister told ANI.
“There are many areas in defence, and we have been working with the Indian defense sector for some time in terms of training and knowledge sharing. Hardware will be part of the future agreement. There is a basis for cooperation and it is part of the four pillars of strategic partnership that we want to have with India,” he added.
