Dyson’s improved Supersonic hairdryer promises better scalp care, but that’s not what I’m most excited about
Dyson has been busy expanding its ever-popular range of hair care products, with the Airstrait being released in selected markets in May last year, followed by the professional Supersonic r earlier this year.
There is now a newer hairdryer in the Dyson range with the announcement of the Supersonic Nural. Unlike the Supersonic r, which was released exclusively for professional hairstylists, the Nural is for everyone and promises to be Dyson’s best and smartest hairdryer yet.
It is equipped with a smart sensor technology that can help protect not only your hair from heat damage, but also your scalp. Dyson calls these sensors Nural – which explains the name of the product – and they are programmed to detect extreme heat and automatically lower the temperature to just 55ºC (131ºF), while also adjusting airflow. This is a comfortable temperature for most people yet warm enough to dry hair quickly, says Dyson.
The British brand promises that the Supersonic Nural will produce glossy locks despite the lower temperature and make styling a breeze (pun intended).
Keep cool
I didn’t think 55ºC would be hot enough to dry hair ‘quickly’, but Dyson has figured out how to make that happen.
In what the company calls Scalp Protect Mode, an invisible infrared beam is projected onto the scalp allowing the dryer to measure the distance between your head and the machine, allowing the device to adjust the temperature so that no matter how close, no matter how far you move the Supersonic Nural also holds, you feel the same heat. This allows you to hold the dryer closer to your head and extend the drying time without burning.
The capsule of the Supersonic Nural is also equipped with small LED lights that change color in Scalp Protect mode. They are blue to indicate the dryer is cool, then switch to yellow for low heat. This changes to orange for medium heat and finally red when it is hottest.
While I think the scalp care sensors are a welcome addition, there’s one more feature that stands out for me personally: the Supersonic Nural can now automatically pause when it senses it’s been put down. This is thanks to the addition of a motion-sensing accelerometer that stops the heating and reduces both airflow and noise. As someone who has had a few mishaps when setting up a working hair dryer, I think this feature alone could be a game changer for many users.
Keep it stylish
Although the new hairdryer is similar in shape to the older Supersonic, the lights and sensors give it a very interesting aesthetic that I think most people will love. And to keep things fresh, Dyson has released some new magnetic attachments that are suitable for all hair types.
The Supersonic Nural is even smart enough to recognize which attachment is fitted and will automatically adjust the settings accordingly.
The striking feature of the new attachments is a redesigned diffuser. Called the Dyson Wave+Curl diffuser, it works in two modes: dome mode reverses the airflow and draws air away from the scalp for smoother, longer waves, while diffuse mode delivers air through the teeth for voluminous, tight curls.
The Dyson Supersonic Nural will be available to purchase directly from Dyson and authorized retailers from early April in Australia for AU$749, and from May in the UK for £399.99. Pricing and availability for the US is yet to be confirmed.
