Quincy Promes is reportedly being held by police in Dubai after a training camp with Spartak Moscow – just weeks after being jailed for six years for drug smuggling.
The former Ajax star was stopped at border control and was not allowed to travel back to Russia with his teammates.
Promes was sentenced to six years in prison in February for his involvement in smuggling more than 1,350 kilos of cocaine in January 2020.
In June last year, the Dutchman was sentenced to 18 months in prison for stabbing his cousin.
The Dutch Public Prosecution Service was not aware of Promes’ arrest at the time, the police said The Telegraph.

According to the Dutch newspaper De Telegraaf, it is suspected in Russia that Promes’ arrest by Dubai police is related to his criminal conviction.
However, this is unconfirmed. Promes was charged last May for his alleged involvement in smuggling the cocaine, which was intercepted in Antwerp in January 2020 in the form of two batches of 650 kg and 713 kg each.
The Public Prosecution Service has officially found Promes and a 32-year-old co-suspect guilty of importing, exporting, transporting and possessing the drugs.
It is alleged that the cocaine was hidden in a shipment of sea salt from Brazil, from where the drugs were transported to Antwerp in two containers.
According to NOSThe former Ajax winger did not show up for the trial and therefore never made a statement about the offenses charged against him.
Further reports suggested the former Netherlands international feels ‘untouchable’ given he has been avoiding court hearings.
According to the NL TimesProsecutors said: “He seems to think he is untouchable, both in Russia and abroad.”
It is also reported that prosecutors wanted to know “how such a successful footballer got so deeply involved in crime.”
Dutch officials had initially demanded a nine-year prison sentence for the Spartak Moscow striker when the case was brought forward last month.
Prosecutors recently said Promes “thinks he is untouchable” as he pursues his career in Russia, where he flaunts his lavish lifestyle on Instagram.

Quincy Promes, who he played for Ajax in 2020, was also sentenced to 18 months in prison in June for stabbing his cousin
In demanding the nine-year prison sentence, prosecutors claimed that Promes ‘normalizes and almost romanticizes the cocaine trade’.
Prosecutors allege that Promes’ wealth meant he had money to invest and was therefore a step higher on the organizational ladder.
The 31-year-old attacker, who plays for Russian club Spartak Moscow, was arrested in December 2020 over the incident that took place in July that year.
The court in the Netherlands found the accusation of assault against Promes proven, but ruled that there was no question of attempted murder or manslaughter. ESPN.
The stabbing, in the leg, took place at a family party in a warehouse in Abcoude, after Promes got into an argument about a stolen chain.
He played in the Netherlands for Ajax at the time, but moved to Spartak in February 2021.
