The University of Alabama has filed an objection to a trademark application by LIV Golf’s ‘4 Aces’ team.
According to sports law attorney John Nuccithe school argues that “the 4 Aces design contains the same literal element” as Alabama’s.
The filing states that the style of the lettering for the 4 Aces is “visually similar and creates a commercial impression similar to” the Alabama design.
DailyMail.com has reached out to both LIV Golf and the University of Alabama for comment on this matter.
The 4 Aces team is led by captain Dustin Johnson and consists of Pat Perez, Patrick Reed and Harold Varner III.
Dustin Johnson’s ‘4 Aces’ Golf Team Could Face Legal Trouble Over Their Logo Featuring the Letter ‘A’
The University of Alabama (R) has filed an opposition to the golf team’s trademark application
This is not the first time that LIV Golf has faced trademark issues.
Last year, Cool Brands Supply, the Argentinian company that owns the intellectual property rights to Fallen Footwear, filed a lawsuit against Phil Mickelson’s HyFlyers GC.
The company claimed that Mickelson’s HyFlyers logo was “nearly identical” to the shoe brand’s 20-year-old trademarked logo.
Ultimately, in December 2023, Mickelson’s team adjusted their logo to prominently feature the letter “H,” as opposed to the old logo, which consisted of two mirrored “F” letters.
In addition to the lawsuit against Cool Brands, German sportswear brand Adidas also filed a lawsuit against LIV Golf in September 2023. Adidas claims that the golf course’s logo “contains three stripes that are confusingly similar in appearance and overall commercial impression to the Adidas marks.”
