Dustin Johnson has hinted that his back injury came earlier this year after a bedroom incident with his wife Paulina Gretzky.
Leading up to this week’s US PGA Championship, LIV golfer Johnson was asked how he hurt his back.
“I just pulled a muscle,” he said, shifting suspiciously on the spot when he answered. ‘Lower back.’
The reporter continued by asking, “Swinging with a club? Raise a bat,” and a big smile appeared on Johnson’s face.
“No,” he said, clumsily tilting his head from side to side. “Lifting a kid… a bigger kid” as the press room burst into laughter.
‘I’m ready!’ the reporter said back.

Johnson and Gretzky married last April and have been engaged since 2013. Pauline is the daughter of legendary hockey player Wayne Gretzky, widely regarded as the greatest player to ever grace the ice.
They first met in 2009, but didn’t start dating until early 2013 – they got engaged in August and married in April 2022 at Tennessee’s Blackberry Farm resort.
The couple have two sons: older child Tatum, born in 2015, and younger boy River, born in 2017.
It was reported at the time that Johnson had hurt his back during a practice round and was forced to withdraw from a tournament in Jeddah in February.
Johnson has previously dealt with back problems that kept him from major championships. A back injury at home in 2012 forced him to miss the first two months of the season, which included The Masters.
In 2017, Johnson again missed The Masters after falling down stairs in a house he was renting in Augusta, forcing him to withdraw from the tournament.

He is currently listed with a 20-1 chance to win the Wannamaker Trophy at the Oak Hill Country Club – tied with Jason Day and Justin Thomas. Fellow LIV golfer Brooks Koepka leads the Rebels in the field 18-1.
These two lead off the breakaway tour in the race to be the first from LIV to win a major championship. Koepka and Phil Mickelson came close to Augusta to finish second in the field and four shots behind winner Jon Rahm.
