That won’t be a surprise to anyone Dune will also be one of the latest entries in our list of the best Netflix movies as it makes its way to the streaming giant. In our Dune review we called it an “engaging, visually captivating sci-fi epic”, albeit one with one major narrative flaw. It seemed like a lot of movie fans agreed with us too Dune earning over $400 million worldwide upon release. The film starring Timothée Chalamet enjoyed renewed success on the 2022 awards circuit, with Warner Bros. developed film achieved 87 wins at various ceremonies, including six Oscars.
Until now, Dune was also available on select streamers based on where you live. In the US, the film was only shown on Max, Warner Bros.’s main streaming service. Discovery. Meanwhile, British and Australian viewers had to head to Prime Video and Foxtel respectively to see it. Now it looks like Netflix is becoming the place to watch Dune – unless it’s a Netflix exclusive in the US – for fans of the great sci-fi film.
An almost perfect Netflix debut
DuneThe surprise addition to Netflix’s back catalog was also oh-so-nearly perfect. Given its critical, commercial and award-winning success, a sequel seemed like a certainty. Fortunately, it didn’t take long for Warner Bros. that confirmed Dune part two should arrive on November 3, 2023. Days later, one of the first film’s producers revealed that filming would begin in July 2022.
After several new casting reveals, including the addition of a killer Marvel star to Dune 2‘s A-list ensemble and an inspired acting choice for the next film’s new villain, principal photography kicked off last summer. Filming will be completed in December 2022 and, after the arrival of Dune part twoIn the film’s first trailer, which teased suspense, thrills, and Chalamet’s Paul Atreides on one of the franchise’s iconic sandworms, it seemed certain the film would meet its November 2023 release date.
Unfortunately, that is no longer the case. One of the most highly anticipated new films of the year, Dune part two was postponed until March 2024, with Warner Bros. cited the strikes by Hollywood writers and actors as a major reason why the launch was postponed. Luckily, the writers’ strike appears to be finally coming to an end, but that doesn’t mean the film will be moving back to its original release date. Until the actors’ strike is also resolved, Dune part twoThe film’s cast will not be able to promote it as part of the industrial action rules. It’s in Warner Bros.’ So it is in the best interest to keep it in its current time slot of early 2024.
If Dune part two would start in November, Dune‘s Netflix debut couldn’t have been better timed. It would have allowed fans to rewatch the awe-inspiring film before checking out the sequel in cinemas around the world, or for those who missed the film the first time around, stream it to see what all the fuss was about runs before, well, to watch the sequel on the biggest screen possible. But if you’re not in the mood for the huge array of horror films that will be hitting streamers everywhere when the spooky season officially arrives, we recommend you stick around Dune on Netflix. You will have no regrets.
