Dune awakening is an upcoming survival MMO from the makers of Conan: Exiles. The goal is to adapt the books and films, giving players the challenge of surviving on Arrakis, the most dangerous planet in the universe.
In Dune awakening, you will awaken as The Sleeper, before being cast into the desert with little more than a knife to your name. From there you can gather, form and build your own guild, fending off giant sandworms and other players as you try to control the flow of spices on the planet’s surface. It’s sure to be one of the most exciting upcoming games on the horizon, and it could well find itself on the Internet’s best MMO games lists when it releases.

The latest trailer we have for Dune awakening was unveiled earlier this year. It’s called the pre-alpha trailer, showing off in-game scenery and a look at the weather systems that will dictate the flow of survival. Check it out below:

Dune Awakening story and setting
Dune awakening is an MMO set in the world of Frank Herbert Dune series. It takes place on the desert planet Arrakis, where a royal family called House Atreides has settled in to take control. After a swift betrayal, the political landscape of Arrakis is thrown into chaos, with multiple factions vying for control of the planet’s most important resource, the Spice. Spice grants extrasensory abilities in the world of Dune, allowing pilots to navigate long-term space expeditions and more. It only occurs on Arrakis and has therefore been the source of conflict for thousands of years.
You play as The Sleeper awakens and is forced into the brutal desert environment. As you progress, you’ll establish your own House Minor and can join any of the major powers vying for control of the region. It has been revealed that you will meet characters from the books and films during the film Dune awakening story, but for now we don’t know the details.
Dune Awakening gameplay
We still have to see a lot of gameplay Dune awakening so far. At the PC Gaming Show 2023 event, Funcom showed off how vehicles will work and touched on the survival mechanics at the core of the game. You can go here to watch the full video.
When you start Dune awakening, you are thrown into the desert, with nothing but a scrap metal knife at your disposal. Enemy camps can be looted to slowly gather materials to help you survive as you build up an assortment of technology, weapons, and survival equipment. Arrakis is described as ‘the most dangerous planet in the universe’, and it’s clear that Dune Awakening wants to focus on survival mechanics to emphasize this.
Water is more valuable than gold on Arrakis, and you’ll need to continually ensure you have enough not only to survive, but to thrive. Once you start building your guild, you’ll need water for industrial purposes, all with the ultimate goal of capturing and controlling bags of spices.
Environmental hazards abound Dune awakening, with huge sandstorms constantly raging on the planet’s surface. These are best avoided at first, but once you have a fleet and more resources, you can use the storms to your advantage. Ground vehicles include sand bikes and tanks, and then there are also air vehicles. Ornithopters can be used to travel great distances and avoid the giant sandworms that can ambush you on the ground.
Combat is called ‘Combines Arms’ and consists of melee (swords and knives), ranged vehicles (guns), vehicles (ground and air vehicles), and skills (sorcery). These are all used in sequence and the player can decide what to focus on. Dune Awakening is primarily a PvE game, where multiple players coexist on the same server and loot separately. There’s also a PvP aspect, in that players can attack each other and fight for resources like Spice.
