A crime scene has been established after an alleged drug lab exploded overnight.

NSW Police and firefighters rushed to a property in Chester Hill at 1.15am on Wednesday when residents of Curtis Road heard an explosion at the back of the house.

Upon their arrival there was no fire to put out, but a heavy chemical smell of acetone and the remains of an underground drug lab.

A hazardous materials team has been dispatched.

As reported by Channel 9, police believe a resident may have been injured in the explosion and has since fled.

“Officers from the Bankstown Police Area Command, with the assistance of NSW Fire & Rescue, located a clandestine drug laboratory,” a police statement read.

“A crime scene has been cordoned off and an investigation has been launched into the circumstances surrounding the incident.
