Major change coming to driver’s licences in NSW: What you need to know

Australians applying for an L-number plate can now take the exam at home instead of having to visit Service NSW.

From Monday, the renewed and interactive exam will be available on any computer with an internet connection.

The exam consists of simulations of real situations and multiple choice questions.

Drivers now only have to pay $55 if they pass the test, instead of having to pay a fee each time they take the test.

Transport for NSW Duncan Lucas said 9 News In other parts of Australia there was the option to take the test at home.

“It’s flexible. It’s accessible. It’s modern. It’s interactive,” he said.

‘The test has been running in four other states in Australia for some time and we have found no evidence of systematic fraud or deception.’

Shabbir Petrolwala, 16, is one of the first to take the online driving test.

The 10th grade student was allowed to sit behind the wheel for the first time last weekend, with his father Murtaza in the passenger seat.

Shabbir drove around in circles in a parking lot at Lalor Park as he slowly started driving.

But for some people, the rite of passage is still important.

Selena Hallacq, 16, took her exam at the Service NSW branch in Bondi Junction.

She admitted she felt the pressure, but said she wouldn’t trade the experience for an online test.

“I feel relieved. It’s one thing off the list and I can actually drive now. It’s something I’ve wanted to do for a long time,” she said.

The new online option also eases pressure on centres in NSW, where many residents take the test.

Last year, more than 215,000 candidates took the exam.
