Driver’s extraordinary explanation of why his Ford Ranger truck ended up on its roof on a quiet street, and it has nothing to do with speeding

  • A man had a very lucky getaway when his car flipped over on its roof.
  • The vehicle then turned onto the wrong side of a quiet suburban street.
  • The cause was something that could have happened to anyone

A driver whose van ended up on his roof across the road in a wrecked accident told police he lost control after spilling coffee on himself.

The man overturned his white Ford Ranger van at the corner of Seven Hills Road and Bingara Road in Baulkham Hills, north Sydney, at around 7:45am.

Fortunately, no other vehicles were involved in the spectacular early morning accident.

The unnamed driver who miraculously escaped without serious injury told officers on scene that he was resting a cup of coffee in his lap when it rolled over.

It could happen to any of us. I’m glad they’re alive and not another road statistic,” one person commented.

A third said: “It’s a timely reminder that the simplest things can cause an accident.”

“I’ll add this to the list of reasons I don’t drink coffee,” another person quipped.

It is a little-known rule of the road in Australia that someone can be fined for eating or drinking at the wheel, if the driver is deemed not to be in control of the vehicle.

In NSW, where the accident occurred, the penalty is a $469 fine and three demerit points.

But so far no charges or fines have been filed.
