Driver’s fury as he’s slapped with a $1,100 fine even though his passenger WAS wearing a seatbelt. Or so he claims…

A motorist has been handed a hefty fine after his passenger was caught by traffic cameras not wearing her seat belt ‘correctly’.

The Brisbane driver was shocked to receive the $1,100 fine and insisted his partner sitting in the front passenger seat was buckled up but the seatbelt was covered by a wet weather jacket.

He turned to Reddit to seek advice and uploaded a series of images of the alleged crime shows the lower part of the seat belt fastened around her waist, but the shoulder strap appeared to be hidden from view by her jacket.

In another photo, the upper part of the seat belt worn by the passenger was circled in red.

The motorist insisted his partner was wearing her seat belt at the time.

“I was fined $1,100 because my partner was not wearing her seat belt ‘correctly’ in the passenger seat,” he wrote.

“As you can see from the photos, the seat belt is worn correctly, but her sweater is covering the seat belt across her chest.”

The driver also said the seat belt was “buckled” and the shoulder strap was “coming out of her partner’s sweater.”

Hundreds of users flooded the driver’s post with comments expressing their confusion as to why he was fined.

“To me it looks like the seat belt is being worn correctly,” one user wrote.

“$1,100 for that is insane,” said another.

‘Wow. I can’t believe people are considering this a violation.”

Others wondered why the driver’s partner was wearing her seat belt under her jacket.

“Who the hell zips their hoody over the seat belt?” someone said.

“That’s a silly way to wear a sweater,” wrote another.

Others agreed, saying that seat belt laws do not specify whether the seat belt must be visible when drivers or their passengers are in a vehicle while traveling on the road.

Daily Mail Australia has contacted the Queensland Revenue Office for comment.

Mobile phone and seat belt cameras installed across Queensland can detect mobile phone and seat belt violations 24 hours a day, 7 days a week.

The fixed cameras use artificial intelligence to detect suspected violations, are active 24/7 and capture multiple images of vehicles passing the camera.
