Driver overtakes a queue of over 50 cars while obeying the Highway Code but leaves viewers divided

Merge done right? Driver overtakes a line of 50+ cars while adhering to traffic rules – but leaves viewers divided… so do you think he’s done something wrong?

  • TikTok user @dills_taxi posted dashcam footage of a three-lane highway
  • The car remains in the third lane about to merge until the roadwork cones begin to appear in front of the vehicle.

A driver has left viewers divided after overtaking a line of more than 50 cars – while obeying traffic rules.

TikTok user @dills_taxi posted dashcam footage of himself driving down a three-lane motorway in England, where he noticed a sign telling drivers that the fast lane will be closed in 400 metres.

Captioning the clip: “Merging Well Done,” the video shows the car staying in the lane about to merge, while other cars move into the two left lanes.

In the clip, a voice, which appears to be the driver, can be heard saying about the choco traffic, “Look, all this!” and shouts ‘Woo!’ as the car moves past the 50 or so cars at a crawling pace.

The driver has no difficulty crossing into the left lane with ample space between cars as they approach the merge.

Someone else in the vehicle is heard saying, “The other car is like, what?” Can we do that? Yes!’

A man’s voice added, “That’s my thing.” Another said, ‘This is why you do it. They see it as cutting in.’

The clip has left viewers divided, but the TikTok user who posted it claims that the actions shown in the video still follow traffic rules.

Survey

Did the driver do something wrong?

Drivers are instructed to follow signs and road markings to get into the designated lane, the highway code says.

Rule 134 reads: ‘Do not change lanes unnecessarily in traffic congestion.

Merging in turn is recommended, but only if it is safe and appropriate when vehicles are traveling at very low speeds, for example when approaching roadworks or a traffic accident. It is not recommended at high speed.’

With this in mind, some users praised the driver for its quick thinking and noted that it inserted safely.

One wrote: ‘Good for you, use the lanes and merge when it’s safe.’

Another added, “That’s the right way,” while another joked, “Yes, you can do that, but it’s polite not to.”

There were plenty of them in the commentary section of the original poster’s clip, with a token reading, “There’s always one,” with Dill’s Taxi replying, “For following the traffic rules?”

Another wrote, “It’s cutting in that causes the tail to come back.”

Someone else said, “All right, but if another 50-plus cars did the exact same thing, you’d create even more traffic jams.”

Another person added, “Never hit a line of traffic at high speed, and a fifth wrote, ‘Use all available roads, read the highway code.’

Another user said, “It’s people like you who cause accidents.”
