Ukraine’s secret service has released never-before-seen footage from the second anniversary of its special forces’ storming of Snake Island, which prompted Russia’s withdrawal from the Black Sea outpost.

The dramatic video shows the island being hit by aerial bombs, followed by helicopters attacking the island, and soldiers also shooting at the island from the air before being dropped off at the outpost.

Russian troops claimed they had withdrawn as a “gesture of goodwill” but were in fact forced to leave.

The final liberation took place on June 30, 2022, and there are Russian claims that this attack was a precursor to the May 7 final liberation.

The Kyiv Independent wrote: ‘Occupying Snake Island allowed Russian forces to blockade Odessa’s Black Sea ports and launch missile attacks on Ukraine until April 14, 2022, when Ukraine successfully sank the Mosvka, the flagship of Russia’s Black Sea Fleet.’

Snake Island – or Zmiyinyi – in the Black Sea made headlines early in the war when heroic defenders radioed an approaching Russian cruiser to “get the f*ck out.”

Ukrainian defenders on the island spent more than 800 days in Russian captivity.

Nineteen heroic Ukrainian defenders of Snake Island were freed on May 31 during a prisoner of war exchange with Russia.

The strategic rock formation was visited by Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelensky after its liberation.

The Ukrainian secret service called the operation on Snake Island “unique and extremely important.”

It was the first stage in one of the most important Ukrainian successes of the war: limiting Russian naval operations in the western Black Sea.

This allowed the UN and Turkey to broker the Black Sea Grain Initiative, which resumed exports of grain and other agricultural products to the rest of the world.
