Ryles is currently a highly regarded assistant to Roosters coach Trent Robinson and has also cut his teeth under Craig Bellamy at the Storm, where he worked from 2015 to 2020.

He was even brought in by Eddie Jones during his spell as England Rugby Union coach to ‘harden up our defence’, as the current Wallabies boss put it.

Ryles is under contract with the Roosters until 2024, but there is speculation that the team will let him walk.

The towering ex-front rower has reportedly laid out a number of conditions for the Dragons to meet before signing on, including being given a five-year contract and a large degree of control over the team’s setup so he can make widespread changes.

St George Illawarra are currently in last place with a record of just three wins after 12 rounds.

The team has also had a horrendous flight from the field, with club bosses failing to show up for a dinner to mark star Ben Hunt’s 300th game and five-eighth Talatau Amone facing serious charges over an alleged hammer attack.

Even the announcement of Griffin’s departure was poorly handled, with the club scheduling media interviews for players minutes after his sacking, ambushing them with questions.

The Dragons are currently led by interim coach Ryan Carr, who competed with Adam Reynolds for the Souths halfback spot before his playing career was cut short by injury.
