Dozens of ready-made sandwiches, hamburgers and hot dogs are being recalled amid fears they are contaminated with deadly listeria

Dozens of ready-made sandwiches are being recalled in the United States over concerns that they are contaminated with listeria.

The FDA announced Monday that the Classic Delight company is recalling 25 products shipped to distributors in Arkansas, California, Maryland, Missouri, Ohio, Pennsylvania and Texas.

Products include individually wrapped ham and cheese sandwiches, chili hot dogs, cheeseburgers, cookies, pancakes and chicken and waffles and were produced between May 11, 2023 and June 6, 2024.

The food items may circulate among distribution companies, which can supply schools, businesses, convenience stores, supermarkets and vending machines.

The to remind was initiated after samples tested positive for listeria and the Ohio-based company is working with the USDA on the recall.

Production of the items has been halted as the company and government agencies investigate the source of the contamination.

The FDA has not received any reports of illnesses related to the recall.

Listeria is an infection normally caused by eating food contaminated with the bacteria Listeria monocytogenes.

Symptoms include fever, muscle aches, fatigue, diarrhea, abdominal pain, headache, stiff neck, confusion and loss of balance.

Most people who eat food contaminated with Listeria do not become seriously ill, but in some cases infection can cause confusion, seizures, miscarriages in pregnant women, and even death.

This can happen when the infection spreads beyond the intestines and affects the central nervous system.

Serious infections are more common in vulnerable populations, such as young children, the elderly and pregnant women.

The CDC estimates that 1,600 Americans become infected with listeria each year, and about 260 die.

The Classic Delight recall is the second related to listeria contamination so far in 2024.

In February, the CDC warned Americans of a listeria outbreak linked to nationwide sales of dairy products.

Researchers said contaminated cheese, crema and yogurt made by Rizo-Lopez Foods were voluntarily recalled due to the potentially fatal infection.

The products were sold in a number of major supermarket chains, including Food City and Whole Foods.

Twenty-six Americans fell ill and 23 were hospitalized in eleven states, while two deaths were reported: one in California and one in Texas.
