Douglas Luiz voted Aston Villa’s Players’ Player AND Supporters’ Player after stellar season

Douglas Luiz cleans up Aston Villa’s end-of-season awards, with the midfielder voted player of the year by teammate and fans after helping Unai Emery’s side to seventh with one Premier League game to go

  • Doulas Luiz has scored five Premier League goals for Aston Villa this season
  • He has now been named Player of the Season and Player of the Supporters
  • Jacob Ramsey won the Young Player Award for the second year in a row

Douglas Luiz has been named Aston Villa’s Players’ Player and Supporters’ Player after a stellar season at Villa Park.

The 25-year-old, who recently made his 150th appearance for the club, has played in all but one Premier League game this season, scoring five goals and assisting a further six.

He was a key part of Unai Emery’s resurgence at the club which has seen them rise from 16th to seventh in the league since his arrival in November.

The manager often spoke highly of Luiz, saying ahead of their 1-0 win over Fulham last month: “His qualities are necessary for us and for the idea I have of creating a team it’s very important.

“He is very important and he has great potential. He can move forward more.’

“I try to support him every day and push him to take another step forward as a player. It does and it works very well.’

Jacob Ramsey was named Young Player of the Season for the second year running after matching his tally of six goals in 2021/2.

At just 21 years old, the midfielder has made 100 appearances for the Villains and was named Premier League Academy Graduate of the Season earlier this week.

The Goal of the Season award went to Bertrand Traore for his spectacular winner against Leicester in April in which he fired into the box for the first time from outside the box.

Jed Steer also received an award in recognition of his 10 years with Villa Park. The goalkeeper did not play this season, but was an important part of the team that was promoted to the Premier League in 2019.

Villa will face Brighton in their last game of the season on Sunday and can secure a spot in the Europa Conference League with a win to keep them in seventh place.

If they lose, Brentford or Tottenham can catch up by winning their last games, but neither face easy games with the Bees facing Man City and Spurs traveling to relegation-threatened Leeds.

Whether they secure a European spot or not, Villa can still look back on an excellent season that seemed a long way off before Emery’s arrival.
